UMÉ is a design practice founded by Victor Lefebvre and Mei-Lan Tan. They believe in blurring the lines between art, craft, and experience. UMÉ collaborates with designers and artisans in various places, such as California, Paris, Kyoto, and Ubud, to bring together diverse skills, perspectives, and traditions in their products. Victor and Mei-Lan established UMÉ after working together in architecture firms, discovering a shared approach where materiality, craft, and technique lead to design. Their work is guided by curiosity, a love for intricate details, a willingness to break from convention, and a deep respect for tradition.
Each bookend cast is crafted by hand, and since concrete settles differently with each pour, no two pieces are identical. While all our items are made from top-quality cement and can last a long time with proper care, they are intentionally delicate in design.
